Story Behind the celebration of Nag Panchami

Story Behind the celebration of Nag Panchami

🌹 🌿 There are many stories and legends related to the celebration of Nag Panchami. As per the “Hindu Puranas” and the Mahabharata, Kashyapa was the grandson of the Lord Brahma (Creator of the whole universe). He married two daughters of Parjapati Dakshna. The names of these daughters were Kadru and Vinata. Kadru gave birth to a Naga race. On the other hand, Vinata gave birth to Aruna. Arun eventually became the charioteer of the sun god, Surya. Vinata also gave birth to Garuda who become the carrier of Vishnu.

🌹 🌿 According to another account, Janmajeya who was the grandson of Arjun and son of Parikshit had organized for a Nag Yagya to take revenge from the snakes and devastate their entire clan. It is so because Parikshit was killed by Takshak Snake. The son of Rishi Jaratkaru, Aastik Muni stopped this Yagya to protect Nagas. The day on which this Yagya was stopped was Shravan Shukla Panchami. This is how Aastik Muni saved Takshak Snake. Since then, Shravan Shukla Panchami is celebrated as the Nag Panchami.
